This 5 week group is for children ages 9 to 12 and their parents to develop strategies for recognizing, understanding, and managing emotions and to learn:
- How to recognize body sensations and emotions
- Calming strategies
- How to challenge negative thinking
- How to communicate feelings and needs in a respectful way
- How to take charge of behaviour
A one-hour parent session will be included before the sessions start to give parents information about emotional regulation and what to expect in the upcoming four weeks. Listen to this podcast for more information about this group.
Dates and times
October 11, 2016 (4:30-6pm) – Parent only evening
October 18, 25, November 1, 8 (4:30-6:00pm) – Children session with last half hour as a parent component.
January 10, 2017 (4:30-6pm) – Parent only evening
January 17, 24, 31 and February 7 (4:30-6:00pm) – Children session with last half hour as a parent component.
$300. Program fees can be claimed as psychological fees on most health insurance benefit packages. Some families may qualify for financial assistance.
For the first hour children will learn self-regulation strategies through engaging and fun activities.
For the last 30 minutes parents will join the group and be provided with strategies that they can use at home to help their child learn to cope with real life situations.
*Parents are required to participate in all five sessions and should be prepared to work on strategies with their child in between sessions.
